Mitsubishi Industrial Modems

for Micro and Compact Controllers

Mitsubishi Electric has introduced a line of intelligent industrial modems for the company's Melsec FX and Alpha XL series of compact and micro controllers. These novel alarm modems have a non-volatile memory and internal processors for handling the entire data communications process. No additional load is placed on the controllers - consequently, the new modems have no impact on the program memory or the processor cycle times of the controllers.

The Mitsubishi alarm modems provide reliable access to remote machines, automated systems and plants. They enable inexpensive implementation of remote maintenance, diagnostics, monitoring, alarms and tele-service applications, via international analog telephone networks or the European-standard GSM digital mobile networks in the 900 and 1,800 megahertz bands (depending on the modem models). Standard modems are also available for simple telemetry applications.

Mitsubishi alarm modems are autonomous communications computers with their own 32-bit microprocessors and up to 66 megabytes of Flash memory. They can send data by SMS text messaging, email or fax and can receive by SMS. A unique feature: You do not need to load any drivers in the controller or change the controller program, because the modems are pre-configured with Mitsubishi controller protocols.

Simple Configuration
Installing and configuring the modems, which are available in a number of different versions, is very simple: You just mount the robust housing on a standard DIN ("top-hat") rail and connect the modem to the controller with a standard serial cable. Alarm messages, telephone numbers, email addresses and other data are entered with MX Alarm Editor, a user-friendly software package. Up to 100 addresses, message texts, controller values and alarms can be stored in the modem. With a few mouse clicks the user can link message texts (the length of which is not limited) to controller values (current operating data, inputs and outputs) and target addresses to alarms. The time-consuming and error-prone programming of the old AT modem commands is a thing of the past.

Reliable Alarm Performance
A multi-level alarm plan referred to as the "alarm cascade" makes sure that important messages actually reach the addressee. If a message is not confirmed within a preset period the modem then automatically sends messages to other addresses, if necessary using different communications channels. This ensures that service staff respond quickly to always of malfunction information and maintenance requests.

The modem also provides access to the entire controller program for remote maintenance functions. Users in any location can quickly obtain an overview of the current production, machine or plant status. Caller number identification prevents unauthorised dial-ins and additional security is provided by support for connections with a user name and password system. The modem can also be configured to send a confirmation to the user when a command has been executed.

Many Potential Applications Modems with remote maintenance and tele-service functions are particularly useful for distributed applications with small devices and stations that are not connected via a company network. Using modems, controllers in remote locations and mobile systems can be inexpensively integrated into modern service concepts. Typical applications include building services; cooling, heating and air conditioning systems; tank storage facilities; pump and water stations; container transporters and other specialised vehicles.

There is growing demand for telemetry solutions, and not just in the micro and compact controller sectors. In response to this demand Mitsubishi Electric is soon going to release a driver for its modular controller system, the Melsec System Q automation platform, for the European market. Further drivers are also planned for the company's frequency inverters, servo amplifiers and industrial robots.
